The small town of Sonoma is truly one of the most picturesque towns you can imagine. We encourage everyone who comes to wine country to visit Sonoma. The history, the climate, the countryside, the wine, everything about this place makes you want to live here and enjoy the good life.
Built around a town square, this namesake to Sonoma county is only 10,000 in population but rich in California history. As the farthest north of all 21 California missions, Sonoma is described as the birthplace of California becoming American. Sonoma claimed to be the capital of the Republic of California "Bear Flag Republic" in 1846. Twenty-five days later the Mexican-American war began and the U.S. annexed California.
Sonoma is also considered to be the birthplace of wine-making in California because the first known successful winery was established here by Agoston Haraszthy, the founder of Buena Vista winery.
Plan to spend an afternoon on the square soon and be sure to include a visit to General Vallejo's home in the Sonoma State Historic Park.
